TRADE of INNOCENTSWomen’s Day Resource - Dramatic Film: TRADE of INNOCENTS

In the back streets of a tourist town in present-day Southeast Asia, we find a filthy cinder block room; a bed with soiled sheets; a little girl waits for the next man.

Alex (Dermot Mulroney), a human trafficking investigator, plays a role of her next customer as he negotiates with the pimp for use of the child. Claire (Mira Sorvino), Alex’s wife, is caught up in the flow of her new life in Southeast Asia and her role as a volunteer in an aftercare shelter for rescued girls where lives of local neighbourhood girl’s freedoms and dignity are threatened.

Parallel story lines intertwine and unfold twists against the backdrop of the dangerous human trafficking world, in a story of struggle, life, hope and redemption in the Trade of Innocents.

“Very rarely do you find a film, a thriller no less, with such heart beating at its core.” Nicki Richesin, The Huffington Post.

“Extremely powerful with a message vital for the world!” Jeffrey Lyons.

Trade of Innocents has very strong moral worldview with light Christian, redemptive content; one obscenity; strong action violence and sexual trafficking with girl being beaten and finally a shootout and man drops to his death, woman is beaten, fight scene, several chases, all very much muted, making it acceptable for television; references to pedophilia and underage sex because movie is about the sex trade, but nothing shown; no nudity; alcohol use in background in one bar scene; no smoking or drugs; and, corrupt police force.

Trade of Innocents is a dramatic movie about the sex trade in Cambodia. Alex Becker and his wife, Claire, work for a rescue organization to stop sex trafficking in Cambodia. They love each other, but their marriage is hurt by the fact that, in the United States, while he was on duty in the Middle East, their 11-year-old daughter Abigail was kidnapped and killed. Neither wants to talk about Abigail. Therefore, their attempt to stop the Cambodian sex trade is deeply motivated by their own loss.

Even so, sex slavery and trafficking pervades the entire Cambodian society, including the government. Parents believe children have to provide for them, even if children have to become a sex slave. A police captain continually tells Alex he doesn’t understand the Cambodian culture and is trying to impose western values.

Meanwhile, an American paedophile tells the head of the local trafficking ring that he wants a young 7-year-old girl. So, the trafficker is on the hunt for a young girl. The paedophile says he’s willing to pay $30,000. The trafficker kidnaps the little girl who’s the granddaughter of the man who owns the shop under the apartment where the Beckers’ live. Claire has befriended this girl.

Alex leads several raids on the trafficking gang, but it seems like someone’s tipping them off. Eventually, Claire and the little girl are trapped by the trafficker on top of one of the pyramids at Angkor Wat. Will Alex get there in time and save them?

Considering the very important and very delicate topic it is confronting, Trade of Innocents does an incredible job of being a powerful, tense drama without being salacious. Mira Sorvino is always a great actress. Some of the scenes are extremely powerful. The plot is clear and well developed. This is an important movie and not only worth seeing but also entertaining.
